2 Dead After Shooting Inside Cobourg Hospital, SIU Investigating

Ontario's police watchdog says a man and a woman are dead after a shooting inside an emergency room of a hospital in Cobourg, Ont.

The Special Investigations Unit is now on the scene at the Northumberland Hills Hospital and has taken over the investigation.

SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro told CBC News that Cobourg police were initially called to the hospital's emergency room for the sound of gunshots at about 11 p.m. ET on Friday.

When police arrived, they encountered a man. Two officers then fired their weapons, Gennaro said.

A man, 70, was struck by bullets and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers then found a woman, 76, who was dead.

Ontario Provincial Police are now investigating the woman's death.

Northumberland Hills Hospital confirmed in a statement that there was a "serious incident" in its emergency department that involved a weapon.

It said its emergency department has resumed normal operations, the scene has been secured, there is no danger to the public, and patients, caregivers and staff members at the hospital are safe.

Care in all other areas of the hospital is continuing as normal as well, it said.

Due to the investigation, ambulances transporting incoming patients to its emergency department were temporarily redirected to other hospitals in the area, but the hospital has resumed full service.

Hospital training helped staff, CEO says

In the statement, Linda Davis, hospital president and CEO, said staff and physicians at the hospital are trained to deal with situations involving weapons.

"While we hope that we never need to use this training, it proved very beneficial tonight," she said.

Davis said the hospital's employee assistance provider is at the hospital, offering support to staff members.

The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Cobourg is about 115 kilometres east of Toronto.

The SIU says six investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate the shooting.

Anyone who may have information is urged to contact the SIU's lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The SIU is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
