Migrant Who Saw Women as ‘Lesser Beings’ Jailed for Raping Woman on a Riverbank
A Kuwaiti man who raped a stranger on a riverbank and thought of women as ‘lesser beings’ has been jailed for 12 years. Abdel-Aziz Al-Shamary, 21, was ‘thrilled’ by the idea of his horrific attack after watching porn featuring outdoor sex on his phone, Teesside Crown Court heard.
fter he was convicted last month of the rape in Darlington, County Durham, investigations found he had posed for a selfie on the same stretch of riverbank and posted it on Facebook. Paul Abrahams, prosecuting, said that in the May attack, Al-Shamary spotted his vulnerable victim walking alone after a night out and started pestering her for almost 20 minutes. The takeaway worker then punched the woman twice in the face, dragged her to the floor and raped her. He told his victim to ‘shut up’ and threatened to kill her if she reported the terrifying attack.
Two women in a passing car saw the horrific attack and followed Al-Shamary before alerting police. He was quickly arrested a short time later.
The court heard the attacker had drunk a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and Johnnie Walker whisky and refused to be dealt with by a female police officer, saying he only spoke to men. He also called the UK a ‘bitch country’, Mr Abrahams said. He reportedly told police his name was Saddam Hussein after being arrested. Al-Shamary’s Bedouin family spent a considerable amount of money to get him to the UK.
