Stihl Opens New Distribution Centre in Oxford

OXFORD — The world’s first electric chainsaw, from 1926, weighed 87 pounds and took two people to operate. Stihl, the German company behind the breakthrough, has made major advances in user-friendliness over the years, and today calls itself the top-selling brand of gasoline-powered handheld outdoor equipment in America.

Stihl last week welcomed local officials to take a tour of its new distribution center for nine states that opened in October in Oxford. But though its sales numbers keep growing, its products aren’t available just anywhere.

“We only retail our products through servicing dealers,” said Casey McGrath, branch manager. “You won’t find them at big box stores or over the internet.”

The company that got its start in Stuttgart, Germany, today sells a product line ranging from leaf blowers and hedge trimmers to its signature chainsaws, today available in models as light at 8 pounds.

From its Oxford facility, it can distribute products and parts within a day to most of its 1,000-plus retailers in the Northeast. Local Stihl retailers include Madison Supply Co., in Bridgeport; L & R Power Equipment, in Monroe; and Bahner Lawn & Forest, in Shelton, among others.

The newly constructed building off Hawley Road is a few minutes from Interstate 84.

Stihl’s Northeast distribution center had been in Shelton, but the company was looking to grow and Oxford had the space available to fit its needs, company leaders said. The Shelton space was about 65,000 square feet, of which about 20,000 was office space. In Oxford, there’s only half as much office space in the 110,000-square-foot building.
