Brother Shares Heartbreaking Story of Ed Sheeran's Serenade for His Dying Sister

Ed Sheeran is known for reaching out to Sheerios in need, but the story of his generous gift to Triona Priestly is a true heartbreaker. Triona's brother, Aiden, recently appeared on Ireland's The Ray D'Arcy Show to describe the time three years ago when Sheeran stepped up to make the terminally ill 15-year-old's dream come true.

Priestly lost a long battle with cystic fibrosis in 2014, but before her death she got a special call from her favorite singer. “We were in this small little ICU room. Triona in this huge bed covered in tubes and machines," Aiden said on the show. “My brother left the room. He returned then and said, ‘I’m just going to put you on loud speaker,’ and he clicks it, then Ed Sheeran comes on and saying, ‘Hi Triona. I hear you’re a big fan.”

Ed spoke to Triona and said he heard her favorite song was "Little Bird" and then played the full ballad for her. “Then we hang up on him – probably a bit rude at the time – the doctor lifts the stethoscope to tell us her heart had stopped. And we take the mask off because she’d been on a machine to breathe – and in that moment, I remember, a burst of light comes from the window and she smiled," Aiden continued.

Sheeran was made aware of Triona's case by fans who launched a Twitter campaign hashtagged #SongForTri.
