Ivanka Trump Gets Booed for Saying Her Father is a Champion of Women's Issues
It was an uncomfortable moment but, perhaps, not entirely unexpected. Speaking at the W20 women’s summit in Berlin on Tuesday, Ivanka Trump was asked by German journalist Miriam Meckel, who moderated a panel of women including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, if Ivanka Trump represented herself, her father President Donald Trump or her businesses. “Well certainly not the latter,” she replied. As first questions go, it could hardly be called a softball.
The president’s daughter said more needs to be done. “Sadly, the United States is one of the only countries in the world, the only developed country in the world, that doesn’t have a paid-leave policy for the benefit of families, so that is something I’m very proud of my father’s advocacy, long before he came into the presidency, he championed this in the primaries,” she said. “He’s been a tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive in the new reality of…”
And that’s when the booing began. When asked about the crowd’s reaction, Trump replied, “I’ve certainly heard the criticism from the media and that’s been perpetuated, but I know from personal experience and I think the thousands of women who have worked with and for my father for decades when he was in the private sector are a testament to his belief and solid conviction in the potential of women and their ability to do the job as well as any man.”
