Hijab-Cutting Attack in Toronto Never Happened: Police

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – Toronto Police now say a high-profile attack never happened last week.

An 11-year-old girl said a man assaulted her, cutting her hijab twice as she walked to school Friday morning.

The Grade 6 student told reporters last week that she was with her younger brother when a man reportedly pulled off the hood of her jacket and started cutting the back of her hijab. She said she screamed and the man ran away, returning a short time later to continue cutting her hijab.

The girl said there were cuts to her hijab as long as 30 centimetres.

At the time, there was a lot of talk about the assault being racially-motivated, and police were investigating it as a potential hate crime.

Police now say this incident did not happen and have concluded their investigation.
