Drug Addicts Build Camp Around 'Safe Injection' Site

The city is receiving complaints about a makeshift camp set up outside one of the new safe injection sites.

The site is located at the Toronto Public Health building on Victoria St, near Yonge-Dundas Square.

By the sleeping bags piled up, it looks like some people are sleeping on the sidewalk overnight, while others arrive early in the morning waiting for the safe injection site to open.

Councillor Joe Mihevc, who is the Board of Health chair, says the city has received complaints from local businesses.

Staff are looking at possible solutions, and a report is expected to be presented at a board meeting next month.

"I suspect in the next little while you'll be seeing a funding request from the Board of Health," Mihevc says.

He says the solution will require that staff find a way to provide support not just inside the safe injection site, but in the immediate vicinity as well.
