Father Charged with First Degree Murder in Death of 11-Year-Old After Amber Alert
Peel Police have confirmed to NEWSTALK 1010, that Roopesh Rajkumar has now been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 11-year-old daughter.
The body of Riya Rajkumar was found in a Brampton apartment, after an Amber Alert was issued on Thursday night.
He was taken into custody near Orillia.
Riya Rajkumar, 11, was the subject of an Amber Alert on Thursday night after her father had taken her out to celebrate her birthday. She was supposed to be returned to her mother, who also has custody of her. When police were contacted, the say they became concerned after indications the father might harm himself and his daughter.
Riya was discovered dead around midnight in her father's basement apartment east of Queen and Kennedy in Brampton. No one else was in the home at the time.
Peel Police told NEWSTALK 1010 early Friday morning that 41 year-old Roopesh Rajkumar was taken into custody by the OPP in Orillia around midnight.
The Amber Alert was sent out to radio, TV and cell phones around 11:30 Thursday night and Peel Police have expressed frustration over complaints by some, who were upset that they were woken up.
In a tweet, they say, "Our communications bureau is receiving numerous calls to 9-1-1, complaining about the late hour of the Amber Alert. As a direct result of someone receiving the alert, we were able to locate the suspect & his vehicle."
Peel Constable Akhil Mooken calls the complaints, "disappointing and upsetting."
